Bluefield State Softball Push OVU but Drop Doubleheader

IMG 2874BLUEFIELD, Va. – Playing in their first Strike-Out Cancer event the Bluefield State softball team put up quite a fight against Ohio Valley University, pushing them to extra innings before losing the first game 6-0 (8 innings). The Lady Blues (1-26, 0-16 WVIAC) pulled within a run in the second game before losing 8-2 in the nightcap.

Strong pitching and even better defense was on display from both sides in the regulation innings as the Lady Blues were held to two hits and the Fighting Scots (20-14, 10-6 WVIAC) were held to three in the regular innings. But with the tiebreaker rule in effect, Ohio Valley was able to score their first run on an error and went on to score five more runs in the top of the eighth on three hits to put the game out of reach.

Ally Southall pitched the eighth inning in relief and struck out all three batters to claim the win. Shandi Myles pitched well for the Lady Blues, holding the Fighting Scots to only five hits, four runs (two earned) while striking out three.

In the nightcap, Ohio Valley took no time taking the lead thanks to a RBI single from Chanel Bouchard in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Fight Scots crossed home plate two more times in the third to claim a 3-0 lead.

However the Lady Blues fought back and scored two runs in the bottom of the third. Lindsey Whited hit a RBI double to put the Lady Blues on the board and Myles drove in the second run. Ohio Valley responded with a three-run fourth inning highlighted by a two-RBI single from Beth George.

The Fighting Scots tacked on another run in the fifth and sixth innings for the final score.

Southall picked up her second win of the day, pitching the complete game and striking out nine while giving up six hits and two runs. Loren Whited was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) in three innings pitched.

Kelsey Graham and Beth George led Ohio Valley at the plate, both going 3-for-5 in the doubleheader. George drove in three RBI’s while Graham recorded two. Whited led the Lady Blues at the plate going 3-for-6 in the doubleheader and Courtney Bowlus recorded two hits in the series.

Bluefield State returns to action Saturday, traveling to Athens, W. Va. for a doubleheader against Concord at 12 p.m.
