Coach JJ Oliver's 2nd Annual Basketball Camp

Crew-crop

Bluefield, WV- The Bluefield State Women's Basketball Coach, JJ Oliver, finished up his basketball camp here on campus last week. The camp was held on Monday, June 23rd through Thursday, June 26th.

There was a spectacular turn out for the campers this year, with approximately 60 campers for the week ranging from 7-18 years old. The campers came from 9 different cities in 4 states: Bluefield, Princeton, and Welch in West Virginia; Bluefield, Peterstown, Cedar Bluff, and Beckely in Virginia; Vineland, NJ and Mobile, AL.

Coach Oliver had a lot of support during the camp with 17 individuals helping/coaching during the camp's duration, half were BSC Women's Basketball Players from this past year.

Coach Oliver spoke of the camp saying, "I was really pleased with the turnout from our camp. We increased our number of campers by about 25 from last year. We had a very diverse group of girls and boys who all came to work hard. We placed our campers through 4 very intense days of learning the fundamentals of the game of basketball and how to play the game the correct way. I was very pleased with how our camp staff interacted with the campers and were so involved. The camp began each morning at 9 am and ended daily at 4 pm. Our campers morning session saw them placed in intense agility drills and fundamental stations for about 2 ½ hours. The evening sessions were filled with mass teaching sessions, individual competitions, and 5 on 5 competitions. On Wednesday, we also treated the campers to a period in the swimming pool. Campers came from as far south as Mobile, AL and as far north as Vineland, NJ. Overall the camp was a great success. I specifically enjoyed seeing the growth in each camper during the station work from Day 1 to Day 4. My favorite time with the campers is the last drill of camp after the awards ceremony where we play Simon Sez Basketball Style."

The last day of camp, there is an awards ceremony for different categories and age groups that are given out to the campers. Here are the results:
1 on 1 Champion – Lexi Herald (8-11 age group) and Isaiah Johnson (12-15 age group)
Hot Shot Champion- Caeley Cook (8-11 age group) and Emilee Beggs (12-15 age group)
Gotcha Champion- Megan Lester (8-11 age group) and Ray Ray Brown (12-15 age group)

Sportsmanship Award- Mackenzie Cheynet (8-11 age group) and Emilee Beggs (12-15 age group)
