2014-15 Volleyball Season Preview

Bluefield, W. Va.— The Lady Blues Volleyball program will look to kick off the 2014 campaign under 2nd year head coach Edric Poitier this Thursday with a tri-squad scrimmage at Concord University with Bluefield College.

According to Poitier, the Lady blues are expected to be much better than last year, with the addition of eight new players, six transfers and 2 true Freshmen, fans and supporters can expect to see a whole new level of volleyball this year. But with a totally new squad, it will probably take a little time for us to develop the type of chemistry needed to be successful right away. However, we do hope to give our fans something to be proud about.

We are inviting the entire town to come out and support the Lady Blues Volleyball!

Returning to the Lady Blues line up for a third season will be Junior captain Ashley Reid, Ashley is a 5'6'' setter with tremendous leaping ability, She hails from Maryland, and is expected to see a lot of action this year as she shares the setting duties in a 5-1 system with new comer Nikolina Nikolic.

Also returning for her second season will be Junior utility player Leandrea Armbrister, a 5'8"outside hitter from Freeport, Bahamas. Leandrea can play almost anywhere, she led the team in hitting, and serving Aces last year. This year she will see action as a libero and defensive specialist. She is very energetic and vocal on the court and will add leadership to the team.

Our final returner is 5'11" middle blocker Tanasia Blake from Bed Stuy, New York. She is a relatively new comer to the sport, but showed tremendous improvement in her freshman year last season. With a season of playing now under her belt, she is expected to be a starter in the middle and we look forward to great things from her this year.

Brittany Bonamy is a 5'9" outside hitter from Nassau, Bahamas. She is a Red shirt freshman transfer from Missouri Baptist University, she is a 3.8 Biology Major, she is expected to be an immediate impact at one of the two outside hitters position. She is a super athlete who blocks well and plays great defence. She will add depth to our line up, and we are expecting great things from her.

Brittany Deveaux, another freshman from Nassau, Bahamas. Brooke as she is affectionately known as, is a 4.0 Engineering Major, she is a 5'11" middle blocker who hits with a lot of power, and plays great defense for a middle. Although a freshman, she is expected to anchor our middle with her excellent blocking skills, and nose for finding the ball.

Jelena Jevtic, one of two players from Serbia, she is a 5'9" true freshman right side player from the town of Nis. A 4.0 Political Science major, Jelena brings a unique mixture of fun and intelligence to the team. She will see some action behind two other right side players, but is expected to add depth to the rotation with her excellent serving skills.

Nikilina Nikolic, a 5'8" setter is a sophomore transfer from Lake Sumter Community College in Florida. She is the other half of the Serbian duo from Novi Sad. A 3.7 GPA student Business Major, Nina as we call her, shows tremendous leadership and has great hands. She is expected to lead the offense as our first string setter, and co-captain.

Jessie Rehwald is a 5'7" Utility player and a 3.6 GPA Engineering Major from Nelson, British Columbia, Canada. She is expected to make an immediate impact on the team. She will anchor the team's defense as a libero, but will probably see a lot of action as an outside hitter as well. She has a tremendous all around game, and can help the team in a lot of areas.

Tyann Thomas, the first half of our Jamaican duo, she is a 3.2 GPA Computer Science Major, she is a sophomore transfer from Iowa Western Community College, a 5'10" outside hitter. TT brings strength to our outside hitting position. She is explosive, quick, and has great power, she will no doubt be a fan favorite with her hitting power. We look forward to seeing how she matches up with other hitters in the region.

Sashane Watson, the other half of the Jamaican connection, is a 3.6 GPA English/Communications Major. Sash is a 5'10" left handed right side hitter who loves hitting outside, she will however, see most of her action on the right side. She is a superb and experienced athlete, and is expected to add leadership to our young roster, she is a Junior transfer from Shaw University in Raleigh, NC.

Lais De Lima Weba, a 3.7 Engineering Major, Lais is a 5'11" redshirt freshman transfer from cross town rival Bluefield College. Lais will see a lot of action as a right side hitter, back up setter and outside hitters' positions. She is originally from Sao Paul, Brazil, but now lives with her parents in Bluefield, Virginia. She has great skills and will be an asset to the squad.

The Lady Blues first game is Sept. 4th at 3pm against WV Tech in Montogomery, WV.
