Shikhar Kapur Repeats as Capital One Academic All-District Honoree
BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – Bluefield State’s Shikhar Kapur has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District II men’s at-large first team released Thursday afternoon for the second consecutive year. As a result, he will now move to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration, he was named to the Academic All-America Third Team last year. Kapur earned a spot on the academic all-district first team with a 3.75 cumulative grade point average. The Architectural Engineering Technology and Civil Engineering Technology double major adds this to a long list of accolades he’s earned this season and over his career. He was named BSC’s WVIAC Senior Scholar-Athlete this season to go along with being named Bluefield State’s Male Athlete of the Year. Kapur was named WVIAC Tennis Player of the Week twice this season and earned All-WVIAC honors for the fourth consecutive time in his career. Awards Banquet Honors All Student-Athletes
BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The Bluefield State College Athletics Department closed their 2012-13 athletic year by celebrating its student-athletes at its athletics awards banquet, Thursday night (May 9) in the Othello Harris-Jefferson Student Center. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the event along with the athletics department and handed out awards including SAAC Community Service Award and the Best Team Player Award. The athletics department named their male and female student-athlete of the year and coach of the year. The event welcomed more than 90 guests including faculty & staff, BSC President Dr. Marsha Krotseng, alumni and student-athletes to celebrate the year. The event was emceed by SAAC member and senior baseball player Robert Haggerty. The SAAC Community Service Award was given to the baseball, men’s and women’s basketball teams for their service in the community this year. Men’s Tennis Season Ends in 5-0 Loss to No. 3 West Florida
SURPRISE, Ariz. – The NCAA Division II Atlantic Region One Champion Bluefield State men’s tennis team closed their impressive 2012-13 season with a 5-0 loss to nationally-ranked No. 3 West Florida in the NCAA National Championships Wednesday afternoon at Surprise Racquet & Tennis Complex. The Big Blues wrapped up their season 21-3 while the Argos improved to 26-1. Bluefield State went into singles play down 3-0 after doubles action. Jacob Carey and Pitor Kruk were defeated by the No. 4 doubles team in the country Kevin Ducros and Bruno Savi 8-2 while ITA Atlantic Region Senior Player of the Year Shikhar Kapur and Vishwesh Sinha were defeated 8-4 by Tony Rajaobelina and Domenico Sano. The Big Blues had a chance to win a match in the No. 3 doubles flight as Niklass Sparr and Vlad Catlan held a 7-4 advantage over Felipe Frattini and Elio Latella but the West Florida duo erased their deficit and claimed the match 9-7. Shikhar Kapur Named ITA Atlantic Region Senior Player of the Year
SKILLMAN, N.J. – Bluefield State senior Shikhar Kapur was named the NCAA Division II Men’s ITA Atlantic Region Senior Player of the Year as announced by the ITA recently. Kapur captured the ITA Senior Player of the Year as he is currently 8-4 in dual singles play and 17-1 in doubles. The New Dehli, India native was named All-WVIAC for the fourth consecutive time this season and was a two-time WVIAC Player of the Week selection in 2013. He is ranked 12th in singles and sixth in doubles in the region after leading the Big Blues to their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Round of 16. For his career, Kapur is a two-time WVIAC Player of the Year and was WVIAC Freshman of the Year. Bluefield State, the No. 1 team in the Atlantic Region will take to the court tomorrow when they face nationally-ranked No. 3 West
