Awards Banquet Honors All Student-Athletes
BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The Bluefield State College Athletics Department closed their 2012-13 athletic year by celebrating its student-athletes at its athletics awards banquet, Thursday night (May 9) in the Othello Harris-Jefferson Student Center. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the event along with the athletics department and handed out awards including SAAC Community Service Award and the Best Team Player Award. The athletics department named their male and female student-athlete of the year and coach of the year. The event welcomed more than 90 guests including faculty & staff, BSC President Dr. Marsha Krotseng, alumni and student-athletes to celebrate the year. The event was emceed by SAAC member and senior baseball player Robert Haggerty. The SAAC Community Service Award was given to the baseball, men’s and women’s basketball teams for their service in the community this year. Head Coach JJ Oliver to Host Basketball Camp
Dates for Bluefield State College head women’s basketball coach J.J. Oliver’s first BSC Basketball Camp have been announced.  The camp will be conducted June 24-27, 2013 (9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily) in the Ned Shott Gymnasium on the BSC campus.  “The camp is designed for young players, age 8-17,” Coach Oliver noted.  Coach Oliver, who is coming off leading the Lady Blues to their best season in 16 seasons, and camp counselors will work with campers to sharpen fundamental skills and enhance their understanding of the game.  Camp fee is $75/participant ($60 if paid by May 30).  Interested individuals are encouraged to contact the BSC women’s basketball office (304-327-4190) for additional information or register at the camp website

Lady Blues Lose in First Round of WVIAC Tournament on Last Second Three-Pointer
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. – The Bluefield State women’s basketball team erased a 19-point second half deficit to take a two-point lead with five seconds left on the clock to only watch the game snatched away from them on a buzzer-beating three-pointer to lose to Shepherd University 62-61 in the first round of the WVIAC Tournament. The Lady Blues (13-13) went into the half, down 34-21 and saw their deficit balloon to 19 in the second half as the Rams (14-13) opened the half on a 7-1 spurt. Dragana Tomic put a temporarily halt to Shepherd’s spurt with an old-fashioned three point play, but Rachel Johnson hit a free-throw to put the Rams up 17, 42-25. Tasia Nolan countered with a layup to set Bluefield State on a 16-6 run to pull the Lady Blues to within seven, 48-41. Charity Harris highlighted the run as she had a hand in 13 of the 16 points in the comeback effort as she dished three assists on the initial three buckets of the run then followed that up by scoring the next seven points

Shae Mebane and Charity Harris Named All-WVIAC Honorable Mention
PRINCETON, W. Va. – Juniors Shae Mebane and Charity Harris were voted All-WVIAC Honorable Mention by the league coaches. West Liberty’s Hillary Southworth was named WVIAC Player of the Year and Pitt-Johnstown’s Jasmine Harper was named Freshman of the Year. The junior tandem led the Lady Blues to a 13-12 overall record, their most wins in a season in 15 years and their first time over .500 in 16 years. BSC also finished with an 11-11 league mark. Mebane is the team’s second-leading scorer and leading rebounder with 11.6 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per game. She also leads the team in blocked shots with 1.3 a game, ninth best in the WVIAC. Mebane has five games where she scored 20 or more points including scoring a career-high 28 points in a win over Charleston. She has five double-doubles on the season. The Greensboro, N.C. native is ranked 14th in the WVIAC in rebounds. Harris, in a first season with BSC is the team’s third-leading scorer with 10.6 points per game and
