BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The Bluefield State College Athletics Department closed their 2012-13 athletic year by celebrating its student-athletes at its athletics awards banquet, Thursday night (May 9) in the Othello Harris-Jefferson Student Center.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the event along with the athletics department and handed out awards including SAAC Community Service Award and the Best Team Player Award. The athletics department named their male and female student-athlete of the year and coach of the year.
The event welcomed more than 90 guests including faculty & staff, BSC President Dr. Marsha Krotseng, alumni and student-athletes to celebrate the year. The event was emceed by SAAC member and senior baseball player Robert Haggerty.
The SAAC Community Service Award was given to the baseball, men’s and women’s basketball teams for their service in the community this year. The three programs were honored for their commitment to giving back to the

BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – One hundred forty-one students earned “President’s List” recognition and 268 students received “Dean’s List” honors for their academic performance during the Fall 2012 semester with seven student-athletes earning “President’s List” distinction and 15 student-athletes named to the “Dean’s List.”
To be eligible for the “President’s List,” a student must be degree-seeking, carry a minimum of 12 semester hours and earn a grade point average for the semester of 3.8 or better. “Dean’s List” students must carry a minimum of 12 semester hours and earn a grade point average for the semester of 3.25 or better.

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Bluefield State cross country teams closed their 2012 season at the WVIAC Championships Saturday Oct. 20 in Greensburg, Pa. The men finished in 11th place and the women did not have enough runners to register a team score.
Kharles Mwalo wrapped up his collegiate career with a 67th place finish after running a 35:51 in the 8k race. Freshman Zach Barnett had his best showing of the season, running a career-best 36:19 to finish 69th. Jordan Draeger (37:59), Joe Kirkpatrick (43:14) and Cody Bragg (44:52) also competed for the Big Blues.
Trish Galligher was the first BSC runner to cross the finish line for the women, running a 6k season-best 28:33 for a 73rd place finish in the individual standings. Tara Hazelwood and Molly Dove also ran 6k season best times with a 35:07 and 35:13 respectively. Dove’s 35:13 is her her career-best on a 6k course. Leandra Childs also ran for the Lady

BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The Bluefield State cross country teams ran in their final regular season meet of the season Tuesday afternoon as they participated in the Battle of the Bluefields’ dual meet against cross-town rival Bluefield College at the Bluefield City Park. Bluefield’s men got the better of BSC winning the meet 18-39; their women did not have enough runners to register a team score.
Bluefield’s Lochlan Kitchen won the men’s 5k race with a time of 16:54 followed by his teammate Brad Schmitt who clocked in at 17:30. Jacob Carey was the first Big Blue to cross the finish line with a time of 17:52 and third place. Jordan Draeger ran a time of 18:57 for a seventh place finish followed by Zach Barnett with a time of 19:08. Joe Kirkpatrick, Johnny Uhegwu and Cody Bragg also competed for BSC.
On the women’s side, Kara Geogiades of BC won the 5k race, crossing the line at 20:16. Lydia Freeman also from BC finished second with a time of 21:28. Trish Galligher was the first Lady

PIPESTEM, W. Va. – The Bluefield State women’s cross country team finished fifth in the Concord Alumni Invitational Saturday morning at Pipestem State Park.
Trish Galligher ran her fastest time of the season as she crossed the finish line at 23:32 to finish 19th in the overall standings. Tara Hazelwood also clocked her season-best time with a time of 26:50. Tiffany Moorer crossed the line at 26:59 while Molly Dove and Leandra Childs set their personal season-best times in the 5k at 27:32 and 29:58 respectively.
Several Big Blues also competed in the event with Kharles Mwalo leading the pack with a season-best time of 34:48 for a 32nd place finish. Jordan Draeger set his personal record with a 35:40 while Johnny Uhegwu clocked a 36:47. Cody Bragg also participated in the race and crossed the line at 40:55.
The teams will return to action Saturday, Oct. 13 for the Battle of the Bluefields’ meet at Bluefield City
