BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The Bluefield State College Athletics Department closed their 2012-13 athletic year by celebrating its student-athletes at its athletics awards banquet, Thursday night (May 9) in the Othello Harris-Jefferson Student Center.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the event along with the athletics department and handed out awards including SAAC Community Service Award and the Best Team Player Award. The athletics department named their male and female student-athlete of the year and coach of the year.
The event welcomed more than 90 guests including faculty & staff, BSC President Dr. Marsha Krotseng, alumni and student-athletes to celebrate the year. The event was emceed by SAAC member and senior baseball player Robert Haggerty.
The SAAC Community Service Award was given to the baseball, men’s and women’s basketball teams for their service in the community this year. The three programs were honored for their commitment to giving back to the

PRINCETON, W. Va. – Bluefield State junior Brittany Cook has been named All-WVIAC Honorable Mention for the second consecutive season as voted on by the league coaches. Regular season champions Fairmont State swept the top honors as Holly Frampton, Chelsea Cobb, Courtney Iacobacci and head coach Rick Wade were named WVIAC Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year respectively.
Cook finished the season second on the team in overall batting average, slugging percentage, hits and RBI’s but was the team’s leader at the plate during conference play, leading the team in batting average, RBI’s and tying to lead the team in hits during the conference season.
The Oceana, W. Va. native split her time at catcher, third base and even saw time in the outfield if needed. Defensively, Cook concluded the season, with 103 putouts, 37 assists and caught five runners attempting to steal

BLUEFIELD, Va. – Wheeling Jesuit’s softball team swept Bluefield State 6-0, 10-0 (5 innings) in a conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Graham Rec Park.
In the opener the game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth. Lorain Tharp broke the tie with a two-run double to center field to put the Cardinals up 2-0. She would later score the third run of the inning on a passed ball.
Wheeling Jesuit scored two more runs in the sixth and Rachel Conrad led off the seventh with a solo shot to left field to put the Cardinals up 6-0.
Ashley Nichols earned the complete-game win after striking out seven and limiting the Lady Blues to one hit.
Shandi Myles earned the loss for Bluefield State.
In the nightcap, Wheeling Jesuit scored in every inning en-route to the run-ruled win. Angie Reddick highlighted the game with a three-run blast to right center to push the Cardinals lead to 5-0.

BLUEFIELD, Va. – Abby Nicholas pitched a five-inning perfect game to lead the University of Charleston to a conference doubleheader sweep of Bluefield State Tuesday afternoon at Graham Rec Park. The Golden Eagles (23-18, 14-6 WVIAC) defeated the Lady Blues (2-35, 0-20 WVIAC) 15-0 (5 innings) and 14-3 (5 innings).
In the first game, Nicholas retired all 15 batters faced and struck out five to pick up the complete game win.
Mandy Cokeley earned the loss, giving up 11 runs (six earned) in three innings on the mound.
In the nightcap, Angel Withrow earned the win after pitching four innings and surrendering four hits, three runs, walking three and striking out two batters. With the bases loaded Nicholas entered the game in the fifth inning and gave up only one hit but induced the three outs needed to end the game.
Kristen Hutchinson came away with the game-two loss, giving up 14 runs (six earned) in 3.2 innings on the mound.
