Awards Banquet Honors All Student-Athletes
BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The Bluefield State College Athletics Department closed their 2012-13 athletic year by celebrating its student-athletes at its athletics awards banquet, Thursday night (May 9) in the Othello Harris-Jefferson Student Center. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the event along with the athletics department and handed out awards including SAAC Community Service Award and the Best Team Player Award. The athletics department named their male and female student-athlete of the year and coach of the year. The event welcomed more than 90 guests including faculty & staff, BSC President Dr. Marsha Krotseng, alumni and student-athletes to celebrate the year. The event was emceed by SAAC member and senior baseball player Robert Haggerty. The SAAC Community Service Award was given to the baseball, men’s and women’s basketball teams for their service in the community this year. Lady Blues Tennis Closes Season With Losses at Bloomsburg Duals
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Bluefield State women’s tennis team concluded their best season in program history with 5-0 losses to Atlantic Region foes Kutztown University (Pa.) and Slippery Rock University (Pa.) in the Bloomsburg Duals Saturday afternoon. Lady Blues Tennis Defeated by Davis & Elkins in Non-Conference Match
BLUEFIELD, W. Va. – The Bluefield State women’s tennis team was defeated 7-2 by Davis & Elkins (11-5) Friday afternoon in a non-conference match at the Bluefield City Courts. The Lady Blues (6-11) were down 2-1 after doubles play as their lone win came in the no. 1 doubles match where All-WVIAC performer Marijana Gjorgievska and Isabella Cubillos defeated their opponents 8-3. In singles play BSC was able to come away with a win in the no. 3 singles match where Tafadzwa Mawisire defeated her opponent 7-5, 6-4. Marta Briales battled to a three-set match at the no. 4 singles position before falling 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 to Rhiana Bruce-Lyle. Lady Blues Blanked By No.20 Florida Southern
LAKELAND, Fla. – The Bluefield State women’s tennis team continued their play on its spring break trip today with a 9-0 loss to nationally-ranked no. 20 Florida Southern College at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The Mocs dominated the doubles competition, sweeping the Lady Blues 8-0 in all three matches. In the singles matches, Florida Southern continued their dominance, cruising through singles play. #36 Big Blues Tennis Open Spring Season With Rout of Mercyhurst
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. – The nationally-ranked no. 36 Bluefield State men’s tennis team opened the spring portion of their season with a 9-0 rout of regionally-ranked no. 9 Mercyhurst University (2-4) Saturday afternoon at the Greenbrier. The Big Blues (3-0) cruised through doubles play winning all matches. The no. 1 doubles match was the closest as it pitted the no. 2 doubles team (Shikhar Kapur and Vishwesh Sinha) and no. 8 doubles team (Jorn van der Veer and Travis Beck) in the region. However Kapur and Sinha came out on top, downing van der Veer and Beck 8-4. In singles action, BSC dominated the competition. The most competitive match came at the no. 3 singles position as Kapur, the eighth ranked singles player in the region took on Robert Rizea, the ninth ranked player in the region.
